Consider This | In Trouble | Temptation

Cedar Point

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand…he will show you a way out so that you can endure.  1 Corinthians 10:13

“Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen. Nobody knows my sorrows…” We may not have sung it out loud, but we’ve all had times when we crooned those words better than Louis Armstrong. When we’re in a difficult season, we feel like we’re hurting worse than anyone else has ever hurt. When the hurricane force of temptation hits, we can’t imagine how anyone successfully resists it. But they do. They have. And they will. God says so. And He tells us how we can resist it too.

What we do NOT need are silly half-truths disguised as scripture. Social media is drowning in such nonsense. You’ve seen this one: “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” It is stated as fact, so we sigh and wonder if we’re the exception. We’re not because it is not true. Sometimes, everyday life is more than we can handle—on our own. What God actually says is that He won’t allow temptation to be more than we can resist with His power. Temptations can be overwhelming, but we always have a choice about how we respond. Will we lash out, cave in, or give up? Or will we hang on to God’s promise that He will provide a way of escape. Instead of surrendering to temptation, we can be on the lookout for God’s way of escape.

Final Thought: Life is often more than we can handle; temptation never is because God will help us find a way out.

Prayer: Father, help me remember this when I’m tempted to sin. It is so strong and my flesh is so weak. But your Spirit in me is greater than both. I know when I’m tempted, you’ll make a way to help me endure it, not give in to it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
