“…Pray to the LORD for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.” Jeremiah 29:7
Social media is exploding with political wrangling. Everybody’s opinion contradicts everybody else’s and it can get ugly. Some people worship America while others spew hatred. Some consider President Trump the fourth member of the Godhead and others think he’s Satan’s twin. Shouting our opinions has become a national pastime, even for Christians. But that’s not the best use of our time. As children of God, we have access to a power greater than social media. Our Creator invites us to appeal to Him. If we prayed for our city, state and nation as much as we complained about them, would things change?
Jeremiah told the Israelites to do just that, but Babylon was the conquering enemy! Imagine how they felt when Jeremiah delivered this message from God. They were to pray for wicked old Babylon—not that an earthquake would swallow it—but that it would prosper. God reminded Israel that if He sent Babylon an earthquake, they would go down with it. But if they prayed for its blessing, they would also be blessed. Rather than rant about our leaders, what if we prayed that God would surround them with godly counselors? What if we asked God to help them make decisions that turn people’s hearts toward Him? We can ask our Father to have mercy on this nation for the sake of His children because when it prospers, we prosper.
Are you praying for the welfare of your community, your nation, and its leaders—more than you criticize?
Lord, you’re convicting me about how much I grumble. I’m quick to shout my opinion, but not as quick to pray. Help me change that. Remind me every time I want to make an angry comment to turn to you instead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
