The Most Wonderful Time of the Year | Time to Trust | More to Life

do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Matthew 6:25

“What Not to Wear” was a popular TV show that highlighted fashion disasters and helped the stylistically-challenged develop taste. We enjoyed watching it from the anonymity of our living rooms because it gave us a sense of superiority about our own clothes closets. After all, we’d never wear that lime green leisure suit or the backless leopard sundress. Therefore, we must be all right. From preschool on, we were socialized to act and think like the culture around us and often we don’t realize how immersed in its values we truly are. Jesus calls our attention to it when He reminds us that life is about more than the 9-to-5 rat race and our bodies are more than showcases for the cloths draped across them.

Make a quick list of the things that worry you most. Go ahead, we’ll wait… Now, how many of those things are also God’s priorities? Some may be. Your child’s health is important. Grandma’s salvation and your mom’s job loss also matter to God. But the things that seem to make us most anxious wouldn’t make God’s Top Ten List. They usually have to do with greed, lust, discontent, or envy. If you were to view your worry list through God’s filter, how many items would remain? When Jesus tells us not to worry, He is reminding us that what makes us most anxious won’t matter in eternity. And eternity is what life is about.

Final Thought:  Your life is more than just trying to make it. Your body is more than a clothes hanger. Are you living that way?

Prayer: Father, I get so focused on right now that I forget there is something bigger. My worry and anxiety are usually over stuff that won’t matter in ten years. It sure won’t matter for eternity. Help me live with eternity in mind. In Jesus name, Amen.
