Unmasked | Fortress of Solitude | Shadow of the Almighty

…abides in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1
“Slow down, Daddy!” Marci squealed as her father’s long strides left her behind. “I can’t keep up with your shadow!” She scampered after him, skipping and hopping until her own small shadow was lost inside his tall one. That’s what this verse means: when we abide in the shadow of the Almighty, our own shadows become lost inside his. In order to do that, we must stay close to Him, walk in step with Him, and forget casting our own shadows. His is bigger and better anyway.
We were designed to abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Abiding there means we actively eliminate everything that would cast its own shadow: sins, pride, worldly opinions… When our own shadows try to become something on their own, we crucify them because they take us outside of His. Once we’ve experienced abiding in the shadow of the Almighty, nothing else can satisfy. It is only there we are protected, fulfilled, and at peace.
Abiding in His shadow requires that we humble ourselves, obey His word, and train our spirits to hear His voice. Much of life’s frustration is due to our desire to cast our own shadows. Pride always wants its own shadow, but our glory is plastic glitter compared the solid gold of His. When we abide in His shadow, He allows us to enjoy the spillover of all that He is. And as we lose ourselves in His presence, His shadow becomes ours.
Final Thought: How well are you staying hidden in the shadow of the Almighty?
Prayer: Father, I’ve tried to cast my own shadow for most of my life. It never satisfies for long. Teach me to abide in your shadow, seeking to move where you move and stay where you stay. Rid me of everything in the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
